Women are the worst offenders of driving and mobile phone use…

26 September 2011

Women seem to pay a lot of lip service about safety behind the wheel – so quick to wag our their little fingers at those who speed and drink and drive. They would never think of doing anything that could harm us, our passengers or others on the road. Or do they?

A recent poll conducted by female-friendly website www.MotherDriven.com.au has found when it comes to being road-wise, women may not in fact practise what they preach…

Despite knowing all too well the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving, a whopping 41% of women surveyed admitted to using their mobile phones when behind the wheel.

Did you know if you use your phone while driving, you are four times more likely to be involved in a crash?

Women go to great effort when it comes to vehicle safety – purchasing cars with five ANCAP stars, fitting baby seats, etc. – but the message regarding the dangers of driving and using a phone is sadly not getting through.

Accordingly, MotherDriven has announce the release of the ‘Bag on the Backseat’ campaign to create awareness and encourage safe driving behaviour. Encouraging you to join and Like their Facebook page, MotherDriven would like you to share this information with the others drivers in your life to make them aware of the dangers of using their mobile phone when driving.

Safety tips to remember for mobile phone use when driving:

•    Put your bag with your phone inside on the backseat so you won’t be tempted to take a text or phone call whilst driving

•    If you are expecting an important call, pull over in a safe place in order to answer it

•    Download the iPhone application DriveSafe.ly which translates text into voice, reading out any incoming messages

•    Fit your car with Bluetooth

•    Even better – make a commitment to only use your phone in the car in an emergency and turn off your phone during travel times.
