The Volkswagen Blues

18 July 2011

Usually we look to Pantone for proclamations about upcoming colour trends. But the world authority on colour is at risk of being unsurped with VW now making claims on what the next “in” colour will be.

To be fair, the car manufacturer is humble enough to speak from only an auto point of view. VW has high hopes for blue as the next colour to be all rage amongst auto trendsters. But not for a few years.

White cars have dominated motor shows for a few years and VW is happy to let them be for a little while longer before making a move with its various shades of blue. It’s the Volkswagen colour, after all.

The problem with VW’s expectations is that they don’t quite match up with actual car purchase decisions. According to last year’s “Global Automotive Color Popularity Report, silver was the most popular car colour, with 26% of car buyers choosing it, black accounted for 24% and white/white pearl and grey held joint third place with 16% each. Hmmmm, good luck VW!
