Prestige General Motors Europe brand ‘Opel’ has finally announced a rough calendar for its Australian invasion. In late 2012, Opel will launch in the Australian market with its Corsa, Astra and Insignia models. The range, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September, aims to “hit the sweet spot” for us Antipodeans. We hope that means a free pair of thongs and a BBQ in every boot.
Astra is already a known and much loved nameplate in this country, where it was sold under Opel’s sister brand Holden between 1996 and 2008. This upcoming Astra, Opel declares proudly, is where “sculptural artistry meets German precision.”
“It has a strong coupe-like silhouette and a very sporty look which makes it much more exciting visually than traditional hatchbacks,” said Opel Australia managing director Bill Mott. As a previous European Car of the Year winner, we don’t doubt just how exciting the Astra is. From launch, it will be available in five-door hatch and Sports Tourer models with a range of engines including 1.4-litre turbo petrol, 1.6-litre turbo petrol and 2-litre turbo diesel.
According to Opel, Australia is one toughie of a car market and has a real penchant for German makes. So, in preparation for your imminent German love affair, here are a few words in the car’s mother tongue for you to practice: Wir leben Autos – Opel’s shibboleth: “We live and breathe cars”.
