Motorcycles and Scooters Thrown Under the Bus

05 December 2011

The feud between drivers of four wheels and riders of two wheels is almost as legendary as that between the Montague and Capulet’s.

The Victorian government is doing its bit to quell the bad-blood between helmet-wearers and gas-pushers in a clever move that sees the former thrown under the bus, or so to speak.

Terry Mulder, Minister for Roads and Public Transport recently announced a 6-month trial in which motorcycles and scooters will be allowed to share the south-bound bus lane on Melbourne’s Hoddle Street during peak morning traffic.

Separating two-wheelers from motorists and throwing them together with buses is an ingenious solution relieving pressure from the busiest roads, making the daily commuter quicker and safer for all.

Data gathered from the trial - along with feedback from commuters - will be used by the Victorian Government to make a decision on whether to allow motorcycles and scooters to use bus lanes permanently.

If it helps reduce the distressing road toll then we’re all for it and hope similar trials are at least being considered for other states’ most congested roads. Stay tuned…
